- In '99 over 6,300 came, in 2000 over 8,000 and in 2001 -
well, a little rain never stopped anybody. No stopping the
riders and no stopping the great diehard spectators, all 6,500
of them!
On August 18, 2002, promoters
hope to see a record crowd converge on the narrow valley south
of this community, affectionately known as Poags Hole, to
once again witness the sound and fury of roaring motorcycles
and their riders as they challenge the gnarliest hill of the
hillclimb circuit to claim the title of King of the Mountain.
This will be Poags Hole 2002!
Spectators will not only witness
an exciting hillclimb. There will be something more. This
year Poags Hole Productions plans on giving spectators more
than just a hill to keep their eyes glued to. They are resurrecting
the Wall of Death right in Poags Hole. Rhett Rotten will offer
a vintage motorcycle stunt show and his Wall of Death. Rhett's
Wall, built in 1941, is the earliest form of motorcycle entertainment
and is guaranteed to be the most extreme.
The wall is 12 feet high, 30
feet round and is a cylindrical doom chamber. The wall is
ridden on a 1927 Indian Scount, a go-cart and a 1957 Harley
Hummer retrofitted with a 250SX Harley dirt bike motor by
Rotten. He races at speeds up to 50 m.p.h. at the top of the
wall. Encounters can be close and contact is made on occasion.
Rhett rides the Hummer for this dips and dives of death. The
Scout is his choice when it comes to performing his freehand
trickery of the highest order.
Motorcycle hillclimbing is one
of the oldest sports in motorcycling and has celebrated over
80 years of completion. Fourteen events make the 2002 AMA
U. S. Hillclimb Championship. Poags Hole has proven to be
one of the most challenging on the circuit. This hill was
literally carved out of tree-covered precipice. It stretches
500 feet with four jumps. The last face before the finish
line is at a 75 degree incline.
The event has received kudos
from contestants, the AMA (American Motorcycle Association)
and spectators, and the promoters are proud The Hillclimbers
Association has awarded Poags Hole Productions "Promoters
of the Year" five years running.
Sponsors of this year's event
include Arkport Cycles, Robert A. Sweeney Agency, Ace Swim
& Leisure, and East Coast Cabinets.
Poags Hole is a family event.
Children 10 and under are free. The gates open at 9 a.m. Please,
no fireworks, pets, kegs, bottles, RV's, or vehicles with
trailers.
